11. Lew Rockwell

It’s safe to say that, among the political bloggers profiled in this book, none have more radical views than the self-described libertarian anarchist and author of The LRC Blog, Lew Rockwell. The avowed goal of his blogging and other political activities is to do everything he can to undermine the state. Rockwell is also highly critical of the mainstream news media, eagerly awaiting the day where news organizations like The New York Times go out of business. Thus, Rockwell celebrates the emergence of political blogging which, as he sees it, has helped diminish the importance of the mainstream news media and offered more radical voices like his own the kind of public platforms they were rarely able to obtain before.

Rockwell has had a long and distinguished career as a libertarian organizer and activist. Prior to launching The LRC Blog in 1999, he served as Congressman Ron Paul’s Chief of Staff, as consultant to Paul’s 1988 Libertarian Party campaign for President of the United States, and as Vice-Chair of the exploratory committee for Paul’s run for the 1992 Republican nomination for President. In 1982, he founded the Ludwig von Mises Institute, a scholarly organization promoting what’s known as the Austrian School of Economics, a branch of economics devoted to radical free-market capitalism. Rockwell served as President of the Institute until 2009 when he became Chairman of the Board.

As someone whose views fall well outside the US political mainstream, and who has little but disdain for the established political parties and the mainstream news media, Rockwell neither seeks to influence politicians or journalists through his blogging. Rather, his intended audience is ordinary citizens and, more specifically, young people as they are far more open to anarchist ideas in his experience.

To attract that audience, and to ensure that readers keep coming back for more, Rockwell strives to always have new, yet ideologically consistent, content and, most importantly, to grab readers’ attention by being thought-provoking and offering views they’re not going to get elsewhere.

What inspired you to launch The LRC Blog?

I was inspired by Matt Drudge’s Drudge Report, although I don’t share many political views in common with him. But I thought his format was very interesting. That’s what really got me into it.

You’re the head of the Mises Institute. How does your blog fit in with your other work at the institute?

I see it as allied, but entirely separate, because the institute isn’t a political organization. In fact, we’re non-political. Blogging gives me a personal outlet because I’m interested in so many things. And I can do it far more freely because the Mises Institute is a tax-exempt, scholarly organization. So The LRC Blog offers my own views on anything of interest to me.

How has the experience been so far?

It’s been thrilling. One of the things that I dislike about the mainstream media is that I see them as versatile state media. It’s true that, with the exception of NPR and PBS, the national media aren’t directly state owned, but they’re
